For such a relatively small area the Shotley peninsula punches above its size when it comes to sporting excellence.

With its world class hockey and sailing stars, to class cricketers and fabulous footballers, there is plenty to pique a sporting interest.

While Brantham Athletic are the most senior football club, it was Woolverstone United that hit the headlines the most often with their Championship winning exploits in the club's centenary season.

Shotley Rose footballers experienced the ecstasy of reaching the Junior Cup final only to feel the agony of defeat - but partied anyway.

There were exciting days for youth players too with Holbrook Hornets being recognised for its integrity with an FA recognition.

Meanwhile, Shotley Rangers was rejuvenated and has risen phoenix like to encourage boys and girls to start playing from as young as five.

In hockey, Holbrook siblings Hannah and Harry Martin once again competing for Great Britain and England, with the sister doing particularly well.

As the peninsula has two rivers and an estuary it is no surprise sailing is prevalent, but it is still exceptional for Erwarton's Amelia Mayhew to skipper the GBR Cadets in the Worlds being held in Melbourne, Australia.
