Woolverstone look forward to big Junior Cup tie, as books on club's history launched
Clive Catchpole's Woolverstone face tasty Suffolk FA Junior Cup quarter final tie at Hazelwoods on Saturday, as two books outlining the club's rich history are launched.
Woolverstone, nicknamed the Lilywhites according to Keith Woods' historical account of the club now based at Hazelwoods, have been in a rich vein of goalscoring form, with three five goal victories in four matches.
They face SIL Division One rivals AFC Kesgrave, who they recently lost out to by a single goal in a seven goal thriller, in the league, so Saturday's game which kicks off at 1.30pm at home on Saturday, promises to be an open encounter.
Woolverstone beat Tuddenham 5-1 at home to reach the last 16, then hammered Stanton 5-0 at home last weekend, with Hayden Catchpole (three), Justin Davies (three), Marcus Lawrence (two) and Aaron Gordon and Jordan Harward one each over the past two matches.
Meanwhile, a second book outlining Woolverstone's history has been released by Keith Woods, called 'The Halcyon Years - 1921- 1970'.
Among the well-researched book is the story of Tony Frank Soo, a long serving Stoke City player, who has this month been inducted into Stoke's Sporting Hall of Fame.
Soo was the first non-white man to play for England in 1942, but did you know he once played with a Woolverstone United Player?
Jack Wright played for Woolverstone United and during the war whilst serving in the RAF, Jack played with Frank Soo.
Frank's name and a whole host of Shotley Peninsula names are mentioned in the republished book, "Woolverstone United, The Halcyon Years 1921 – 1970." Written by ex-chairman Keith Wood.
There are two books available for purchase in aid of Woolverstone United funds. They can be purchased separately or as a pair from website woolverstone.com/football Individual books are £11 each or £20 a pair plus £5 postage (or local pickup, COD, can be arranged).
These would make ideal Christmas presents for those interested in the history of the Shotley Peninsula, with many a tale of local pubs, people and times during the war years.
The story of Frank Soo, "Frank Soo: England's pioneer who died with a tale untold" can be found on the BBC Sport website.
