Gibson's worldy sparks huge celebration as Woolverstone knock holders AFC Kesgrave out of Suffolk Junior Cup
An Alex Gibson wonder volley sealed a 3-1 win for Woolverstone over holders AFC Kesgrave at Hazelwoods, sparking a bench clearing celebration.
Marcus Lawrence put Woolverstone ahead early in the second half, but fellow SIL Division One side AFC Kesgrave levelled two minutes later when they took advantage of a keeper clanger,
Paul Dennington had made s superb double save in the first half to deny Kesgrave in a tight tie.
Jordan Harward put the Wolves back in front with a smart shot across goal, which went in off the back post.
Kesgrave went down to 10 men when they had a player sin-binned for dissent, and Woolverstone kept up the pressure.
Their reward came in the dying moments when unmarked Gibson hit a technically perfect, and spectacular, 15-yard volley, which gave the keeper no chance.
Even manager Clive Catchpole sprinted the 50 yards to join in the mass celebration, breaking the corner flag in the process.
"What na amazing finish," said Catchpole. "Two excellent goals towards the end.
"We deserved it overall. I was disappointed with the goal we gave away after taking the lead, then when we missed a free header I thought it was not going to be our day. But we battled well and showed a bit of bottle to win it.
"The first half was incredibly tight, they probably had the best chance but our keeper made that double save."
Like everyone, Woolverstone will want to avoid in-form Thurston, in the last eight, with Achilles, Grundisburgh, Somersham, Stanton, and Kirton Athletic in the quarter-final draw.
Catchpole added: "We have not been on a cup run for about six seasons so this is great for the club, and to knock the holders out too, is brilliant."
After scoring five goals in their previous four matches, Catchpole joked about just getting the three, but pointed to the positives at the back too.
"We are scoring goals for fun," said Catchpole. "Just the three today but we have not been conceding as many and we defended really well
"Last season the players may have let their heads drop when they equalised, but they are not doing that now and they deserved it."
Woolverstone go to AFC Kesgrave next Saturday in the league.
