Tattingstone hit Woolverstone for six in peninsula derby
Tattingstone United got their title hopes back on track in spectacular style with a 6-0 win over Shotley peninsula rivals Woolverstone at Bourne Vale.
Tatt boss James Parker was understandable delighted with his team's showing, and the timely confidence boost after a recent wobble which has seen then drop for top spot to third in the Ipswich and Suffolk League Division One.
"It was a brilliant performance from the boys," purred Parker.
"It could have been more. We missed four one on ones in the first half but their keeper's display was brilliant and the scoreline is a bit harsh on him."
Mathew 'Bonesy' Lewis, an Ashley Blow penalty Jordan Cork, Lesal Thompson, Charlie Snowling, Jordan Crocker all netted while Arlon Clarke kept a clean sheet as Tattingstone ran riot.
Bonesy, one of Tattingstone's originals got the rout underwa put Tatt ahead in the first half with a good header from a corner and only some excellent shot stopping from Woolverstone's Paul Dennington prevented a bigger scoreline.
But even Dennington could not prevent a second half rampage from the hosts as a combinations of dire defending and bright attacking play saw five unanswered goals.
Woolverstone, second bottom in the table, will retain their Division One status unless Wenhaston pull off a football miracle.
United boss Clive Catchpole has demanded his side produce a positive reaction to the resulting rollicking he gave them at full time.
Catchpole added: "We just did not turn up and were shocking all over. We did not look interested in the game. We did not clear our lines and gave them four goals by not getting rid of the ball, our defence was terrible today.
"Paul was outstanding, we could have been five or six down by half-time but he made some grae save so he is the only player that can hold his head ups after that."
Tattingstone take on AFC Kesgrave next week as the run in begins and Parker believes this win will be the catalyst to win promotion after suffering a wobble when they lost to Bacton and their top spot..
He said: "We are on a title push so we are trying to take one game at a time but after falling off over the past few weeks, hopefully this win will hold us in good stead for the next few weeks.
"That wobble was always going to happen and perhaps the boys, and myself, then put ourselves under too much pressure to get back to winning ways. Perhaps that loss caused a lack of confidence but from now this will give us a boost against Kesgrave and on from there."
While it is not quite Ipswich against Norwich the rivalry is real and the two teams meet again in a couple of weeks at Woolverstone's Hazelwoods Ground on Saturday, April 22 with a 14.30 kick off.
Parker is not getting carried away and said: "It is always tough at their place but the boys were ready this week so need to be like that again then."
Catchpole has told his players to learn lessons and make sure they show up.
"I'm just hoping we get a reaction in a fortnight," he said: "We don't want another perforamce like that but if we keep making basic mistakes then there is nowhere to go., we need to learn from it."
