Matty Hayden Brantham fired into the second round qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup, just hours after Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær sent the Imps a good luck message.
Thurlow Nunn side Imps pulled off something of a shock when they beat St Ives, who play in the Southern League Premier division, a level above Athletic in the football pyramid, in front of around 300 fans at the Brantham Leisure centre.
Patrick Brothers set Hayden up with left wing cross and the emphatic finish early in the first half, was enough to take Brantham through.
They also had a Greg Pelling goal disallowed and defended stoutly to ensure victory and get through to this stage for the first time in their history.
Goalscorer Hayden said after the game: "It feels great, the boys were absolutely brilliant. They put the effort in and we are very, very happy."
Solskjær was in a team hotel in Luton ahead of their Carabao Cup match at Luton, which the Red Devils won 3-0, when an Imps fan got him to send a good luck message to the Brantham boys and posted it on Twitter (link here).
He said: "Brantham Athletic - I wish you all the best tonight against St Ives, I'm sure you will go through. All the best."
And so it proved, as Brantham go into the hat for Friday's draw. The Imps are unbeaten in their league and entertain Gorelston at the Leisure centre on Saturday.
