While Brantham Athletic vice chairman Darren Smith was celebrating his recent investiture as a London Freemason, and watching England win at Twickenham, his club's policy continues to fail.

The Imps went done 2-0 at Thetford Town who did the double over them after a brace from Cameron King.

It could have been worse but for the goalkeeping heroics of Finn Shorten.

However, they were not helped by a late red card when Ollie Godbold was sent off for a second yellow. The first for punching the ball into the net from a corner, so desperate are Brantham to score just their second goal of 2024.

Brantham have now lost nine games in a row, have managed just one goal, in a 5-1 defeat, and were knocked out of the League Cup quarter final by a lower division side.

It is believed to be the worst run in Brantham's 147 year old history and while the young and relatively inexperienced players continue do their best, fingers are being pointed at Smith and chairman Roger Peck.

Even worse, according to those closely associated with the club, since the dark days of the 1990s, when they were suffered relegations and merged with Sutton United for a short period due to financial problems.

There is a sense of deja vu now, after a row over wages earlier this year sparked discontent and they parted ways with management duo Pip Boyland and Alex Drennan and the Brantham committee are clearly not concerned about results even as they skip down the division as there will be no relegation following Norwich United's demise.

The Brantham vice chairman was not at Thetford to see the defeat as he preferred to watch the rugby at Twickenham.

Meanwhile, Smith also faces allegations of being part of the Leisure Centre based club's financial irregularities, which are being put into the public domain - more to follow on that.
