  •  East Anglia THREE will be ScottishPower Renewables' biggest ever offshore windfarm – and the second largest in the world – when it comes into operation in 2026, producing enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 1.3 million homes.
  • The partnership underlines the importance of the energy industry and business working together to build energy security, decarbonise and deliver a net zero future.

ScottishPower Renewables – part of one of the world's largest clean energy companies – and Amazon have strengthened their clean power partnership by signing a renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) for 159 MW of green electricity from East Anglia THREE.

The agreement marks Amazon's first offshore wind partnership with ScottishPower, part of the Iberdrola group, in the UK and builds on an onshore wind agreement revealed ahead of the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow in 2021.

The new agreement will see the company purchase a portion of the 1.4 GW of clean electricity generated by East Anglia THREE when it comes into operation in 2026.

This green energy boost will support Amazon's commitment to match all of its global electricity use with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – five years ahead of its original 2030 target.

Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables said: "Net zero can only – and will only – become a reality if we all do our bit and companies like Amazon are leading that corporate drive towards a cleaner and greener future.

"Partnerships like this support the growth of more renewables, guarantee energy security, and help deliver price stability – all the while driving down emissions and delivering green jobs and investment."

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy at Amazon in EMEA, said: "Amazon is enabling renewable projects worldwide because transitioning to carbon-free energy sources is one of the most impactful ways to lower carbon emissions, and help us reach our Climate Pledge commitment of net-zero carbon by 2040.

"This is good for the planet and our customers.

"This agreement will mean more energy independence, more local jobs and lower emissions."

East Anglia THREE will support more than 2,300 jobs during construction and 100 long-term jobs over the lifetime of the windfarm.

Powered by 95 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 megawatt (MW) turbines and located 69km off the coast of Suffolk in the UK, the project is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of 1.3 million homes.

It will be ScottishPower Renewables' biggest ever windfarm – and the second largest in the world – when fully operational.

ScottishPower has already placed contracts worth nearly £70 million with UK companies for East Anglia THREE. It's estimated that the company will invest more than £2 billion within the UK to support the construction and operation of East Anglia throughout the project's lifetime.

Construction of the onshore substation and works on the onshore cable route got underway in July 2022, with offshore construction due to start later this year.
