Blessed with beautiful weather and spectacular sailing, the 61st Pin Mill Barge Race, thrilled hundreds of spectators on the Shotley peninsula this weekend.

While the gorgeous sunshine was wonderful for many, it meant challenging conditions for the sailors on board the majestic beat that have been sailing these waters for nearly 200 years

The overall race winners the 125-year-old iron and steel vessel Wyvenoe with the fastest average speed overall, and also winner of Class B, was the first over the start line and to the outer mark.

James Ackland, the barge race secretary, said: "The day was fabulous with great weather, but changeable enough conditions to test the seamanship of the very experienced skippers.

"This year we had 10 barges racing with one barge following. Unfortunately due to crew difficulties Marjorie was unable to take part in the match even though she had made the trip to Pin Mill from Kent.

"Wyvenhoe completed her race with the fastest average speed. Therefore won the winners pennant. Notably the half barge Sunlight took part in the match for the first time. We are hoping in future that a greater number of half/yacht barges will take part which will allow their own class in the match.

Seasoned sailor James explained how due to the tides it was necessary to have a very early start (6:30am) catching the ebb to take the barges down the river. 

All barges headed out towards Walton to Stone banks. Due to the conditions the course was shortened for the slower barges. 

They headed straight back to Pin Mill. The rest of the fleet came back into the harbour and started up the Stour. Just before the sea breeze kicked in, around midday, there was a period of calm. 

As the fastest barges rounded Ramsey buoy it was necessary for them to kedge (drop anchor) to prevent them being carried up river by the flood tide. 

Meanwhile the sea breeze started from the harbour side allowing the class B (staysail) barges to catch up with Class A (Bowsprit) barges. 

James added: "When the wind built to a constant a lot of the barges had bunched around Ramsey. The racing that ensued was amazing." 

Large numbers of people lines the rivers Orwell and Stour, taking photos on their phones, and enjoying the hospitality put in pubs such as the Red lion, Shipwreck and Butt & Oyster.

Babergh councillor for Ganges ward (which includes Shotley and Erwarton) Derek Davis, who is also the cabinet member for Economic Growth Regeneration Culture and Tourism, was delighted to see the race being such a huge tourist attraction, which benefited business on he peninsula.

He said: "This is another example of the fabulous heritage offer we have on the stunning Shotley peninsula, and it was wonderful for so many people come out and enjoy this spectacular for free.

"It is another boost for the many wonderful pubs, restaurant and other businesses we have here.

"Can I add a huge congratulation to everyone at Pin Mill Sailing Club for organising the 61st Barge Race so successfully. Long may it continue."
