A 95-year is backing a campaign to help save a popular takeaway cafe as he fears he is too old to get another job.

Arthur Pye, who lives along the Strand in Wherstead, has been going to Macs on the Bridge, every morning at 6am for 27 years, to help prepare tea and breakfasts.

Loyal worker and customer Arthur has joined campaigners looking to prevent action by Suffolk Highways to close the vital lay-by parking and put in a pedestrian crossing on Wherstead Road next to the popular Bourne Bridge cafe.

Arthur, pictured, joked: "Where am I going to get another job at my time of life."

The sprightly nonagenarian is hugely popular with the early morning customers and Macs on the Bridge co-owner of four years Mick McNally, described him as a legend and epitomises the community spirit among customers at the cafe.

Nick added: "Arthur came along with the business. He comes in on his scooter, chops up mushrooms, makes tea, helps open up at 6am and he doesn't get paid, he takes his breakfast home and that's him."

Nicks wife Sam handed in pages and pages of the signed petition, totalling more than 1,100 to Suffolk council last week.

The couple are waiting to hear back from Babergh, that wants the crossing as part of the nearby Klondyke Field development, and are concerned they may have to close their business.
