Six people have been rescued after being trapped in the high tide at the Strand this afternoon.

Fire crews also extinguished a fire after a car caught light moments after being rescued from the high tide.

Holbrook's Coastguard team were among the rescuers along with six Suffolk Fire crews, and the police.

Five cars in total became trapped in the flooded B1456 as they attempted to drive through the river water, despite repeated warnings for motorist not to attempt getting through.

The six people were trapped in the vehicles and did not need any hospital treatment.

Emergency services were already on scene after being called out at just after 2.30 pm when the Honda Civic started smoking and then caught light at 4pm.

"It was bonkers," said one eye witness. "When are people going to learn?"

Holbrook's retained crew attended, along with two from Ipswich East, one from Woodbridge, and three from Princes Street.

Motorists were warned this morning by Nub News that the combination of Storm Franklin and the predicted high tide would create problems either side of 3pm. Full story here.
