Tips from a peninsula driving instructor on lessons, theory and practical tests

Advanced driving instructor Zala Tenzing admitted he was as apprehensive as any of his student when lessons started up again last week.

With a 17-week waiting list to take a practical test, after more than 42,000 were postponed by the Driving Vehicle Standard Agency (DVSA] in the past year, Zala knew things were going to get busy once lockdown restrictions eased.

"As a driving instructor it came with some concerns," said Zala. "After working for only a few months in the past year would I still be up to it? How would my pupils be?

"I needed not to worry I am still capable and all my pupils were keen to get going again. Also, all seemed to like my new car."

There has be a churn in terms of instructors and the DVSA has taken action to get through the backlog with a recruitment drive.

Zala said: "Many of the instructor's are back but some have gone and there are a few new faces out there. The DVSA are taking on more examiner's and they will be doing more tests each day.

"It's good to be back, but I still feel all the issues with getting tests will go on for at least a year. Covid 19 will play a big part in how soon you will get your licence."

Zala has given learners on the peninsula a few tips to help themselves as they look to take lessons, and pass their theory and practical tests.

"You should have a plan," said Zala. "Think about when are you going to take your theory test, how are you going to study for it?

"I recommend the DVSA Guide to the theory test and hazard perception dvd Also you will need an updated Highway Code.

"You need to think about when do you hope to take the practical test because at the moment there is a 17-week waiting time."

As well as knowing how are you going to finance your training, learners need to find the right instructor.

He said: "When you get your instructor, if it's not working out change instructor. It's your lessons, your test.

"When you book your lessons make sure you book your first lesson at the time and day you are going to be free each week."
