Hungry Hack review: Loch & Quay's Sunday lunch

Even though restaurant goers can now eat inside the Loch & Quay at Woolverstone marina is one of those places you are likely to prefer dining outdoors.

My teenage son and I went on a sunny Sunday afternoon and sat on the terrace soaking up the views and activity along the river Orwell, looking as far down as the iconic bridge.

With a fabulous summer just a round the corner , and the restaurant also open inside now, the terrace is the popular choice, although in fairness we had to dash into the marquee with our Sunday roasts as a shower struck, although we barely missed a beat as we quickly tucked back into our respective lamb and chicken lunches.

As you will see by the pictures, (the food looked so good I almost forgot to snap before we got stuck in) the roasts were everything you would expect and hope for.

Good portions, cooked superbly with tender meat, four different vegetables done without being turned to mush so they still had taste and texture, while the roast potatoes with that perfect balance of crispy on the outside, soft inside.

Although suitable sated, we forced ourselves to try the desserts, and while my son was disappointed the chocolate sponge had sold out and settled for ice cream, an individual lemon meringue pie was available and the Hungry Hack found that to be the perfect combination of a crumbly base, a citrus tang, and decent meringue.

My only criticism was it came without any ice cream, custard or cream, which I personally felt would have complemented the pie.

A special word about the staff that handled the changing circumstances in terms of customers deserting their table for shelter with admirable patience and adaptability. The service throughout was attentive without being overbearing and from the moment we called to book to paid up before going, it was comfortably professional.

Set in a wonderfully scenic spot the Lock & Quay is quintessentially Suffolk. From the locally sourced food whenever possible, to Ed Sheeran songs playing in the background.

The views offer tranquility, yet the dinghy racing, yachts gently sailing past offers an ever changing panorama. We even caught glimpse of Arthur Ransome's boat the Nancy Blackett, which is based at Woolverstone marina during the summer months.

The whole meal, with a couple of drinks, came to £47.30 and given the service, a tip of more than 10% was well deserved.

The big question on all these visits is; would you go back? In our case it was a resounding - yes.
