Suffolk FA have launched an investigation after Woolverstone United's game at Ipswich Athletic was abandoned last Saturday after the referee feared he was going to be physically attacked by the home contingent.

Title-chasing Woolverstone were goalless against bottom club Ipswich in the second division Macron Suffolk & Ipswich League at Whitton's King George V playing fields, when the game was called off.

A Suffolk FA spokesman said: "We are aware of an alleged incident during the Ipswich Athletic versus Woolverstone United match on Saturday, March 5th.

"An investigation has been launched with the co-operation from the relevant parties."

It is understood the referee became concerned after he booked an Ipswich player for a heavy change on a Woolverstone defender.

The Ipswich player became verbally abusive and was sent off. The situation escalated with other home players getting involved and the referee took the flags from those running the line and then walked off the pitch.

Due to the abandonment, Woolverstone's hopes of winning the title were put on hold until this coming Saturday when they face second placed Cockfield United at the Hazelwood Stadium.
