News in Shotley Peninsula

On this day in 1530, Suffolk's very own Thomas Wolsey, English Cardinal and Lord Chancellor, died en route from York to his imprisonment in the Tower of London of natural causes. Wolsey, the son of an Ipswich butcher, was a regular visitor to the Shotley peninsula and Erwarton Hall in particular but it was his failure while Cardinal to secure permission from the Pope to divorce Catherine of Aragon so he marry Anne Boleyn, that caused his downfall. Wolsey did though help introduce a new tax system when he was Chancellor, which meant a shilling in every pound was taxed, so the poorer paid less and the rich more.

Peninsula councillors have added their tributes to Nick Ridley who was who last night won the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award (in memoriam).

The LGIU and CCLA announced that Cllr Nick Ridley OBE of Babergh District Council had been given the accolade at the annual Councillor Awards with Cllr John Ward (Leader of Babergh Council) accepting the award on Cllr Ridley's behalf.

On This Day: in 1925, Ernest Wiseman, OBE, known by his stage name Ernie Wise, was born. He was best known as one half of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, who became a national institution on British television, especially for their Christmas specials.

Issues around the closure of the Orwell Bridge in high winds, which has huge effects on Shotley peninsula, Felixstowe and Ipswich residents, are set to be discussed in Parliament next week.

Ipswich MP Tom Hunt secured a debate and will raise the matter during Thursday afternoon's adjournment debate in the House of Commons, highlighting the importance of a solution being delivered and the urgency in which measures should be carried out.

Health minister Matt Hancock today announced that Suffolk, including the Shotley peninsula, will go into Tier Two when the lockdown ends next week.

Despite figures in the county being among the lowest in the country, Babergh has suffered a number of cases over the past month, with 106 recorded in the past seven days and Mr Hancock has said in order to protect the NHS, Suffolk will go into Tier Two.
