Update: A man detained for questioning after a gun, reported to be an antique , was left in a pub is understood to have been released on conditional bail without charge, while investigations continue.

A peninsula councillor has been arrested after allegedly leaving a package including a gun in a pub, addressed to the parish chairman.

Mark Aherne is alleged to have left the sinister parcel, complete with a concerning message, at the peninsula pub for regular customer and Brantham chairman Alastair McCraw.

Police were alerted and Cllr Aherne was taken to Suffolk Police headquarters in Martlesham for questioning.

Meanwhile, Cllr Ahern was found to have breached the Suffolk Councillor's Code of Conduct by Babergh monitoring officer, which was upheld by the Suffolk Joint Standards Committee.

The controversial councillor has vowed to stand for re-election, despite completely falling out with staff and councillors. He has not yet been officially nominated.
