English adventurer, writer, spy and courtier Walter Raleigh was beheaded on this day in 1618 for allegedly conspiring against King James I of England. Raleigh, famously introduced potatoes and tobacco to the nation but twice fell foul of King James, the second time for ransacking a Spanish settlement on his voyage to find El Dorado and was topped at the Palace of Westminster.
