Trees were blown down, a sign buckled, and the historic foot ferry was left semi-submerged as storms lashed the Shotley peninsula over the weekend.

The unnamed storm start gathering force on Thursday, by Friday it had wrenched the Shotley to Harwich and Felixstowe foot ferry from its moorings and eventually took on so much water it was lodged under a gangway at Ha'penny Pier.

Relatives trying to get to a stricken woman in Erwarton found their way blocked by a tree which had been blown over, but they did get to her and she is now fine.

A direction sign, usually marking the way to Brantham Church, was blown over by the force of high winds, revealing a rusty core. Locals joked it was at least pointing in the right direction as it bent over facing the sky.

Trees blocked public footpaths, also in Brantham and residents reported minor damage was caused to fences and some outbuildings in Harkstead, Chelmondiston, Holbrook and Shotley.
