Shotley parish council last night agreed to write to Babergh objecting to a revamped housing scheme planned for the edge of the village.

Although short of numbers, after apologies were made, the six parish councillors unanimously agreed they would reflect villagers concerns and also to include suggested policy grounds for refusal.

More than 60 people attended the planning meeting at Shotley village hall to reaffirm their objections to the scheme on land north of the Street, Shotley, opposite the Corner Garage.

More than 125 written objections have been lodged against the old and this new application, with concerns about traffic, infrastructure, environment and new housing schemes turning the village into a town.

Mark Wrinch for the applicant, outlined the benefits of the new scheme which was made in response to concerns from residents and statutory consults, including Babegh's planning team.

Mr Wrinch, a solicitor by trade, explained the change in mitigation included focusing on the housing needs of the village as outlined in a consultation survey carried out by the applicants agents, and also the current housing needs as outlined by Babergh.

This includes affordable rented two and three bedroom homes, including single storey, and shared ownership to help young people get on the housing ladder.

He also assured residents there were no plans for further developed on the site, which could be secured by a legal covenant.

A new cycle path, play area, wildflower meadow and more open space has also been factored in after discussions with the relevant bodies.

Babergh district councillor Derek Davis was on hand to answer a range of questions regarding the process.

Details of the application can be found on the Babergh planning website here... Using reference; DC/22/05162

People can still submit their comments until Wednesday, April 26.
