Peninsula Escapes Worst of the Weather With Minimal Damage

By Derek Davis 1st Mar 2020

Shotley peninsula has escaped relatively lightly after a third storm in a month.

Persistent rain from Storm Jorge swept across the peninsula, causing numerous youth football matches to be called off due to unfit pitches, while some country lanes struggled to cope and deep water formed along Wades Lane and Lower Holbrook.

Jorge followed storms Ciara and Dennis in battering villages from Shotley to Brantham and all in between. Trees briefly blocked roads around Pin Mill, Stutton, Shotley and Harkstead, but were swiftly cleared by locals. A few fence panels blew away but there were no reports of any structural dame to villagers' homes.

The high winds and heavy rain exacerbated coastal erosion problems with a section of public footpath along the river Storm by Shotley cliffs has been closed by Suffolk County Council's Public Rights of Way, and a path at Holbrook Creek was damaged.

But compared to many other areas of the country our area was left undamaged as Storm Jorge skirted around East Anglia.

Unlike the previous two storms, coupled with high spring tides, the latest downfall did not cause the Strand to be flooded as before when dozens of people were left stranded, with Coastguard, police and fire crews called out to help motorists caught when their cars stalled or were blocked in.

New development stood the test of the three storms, with new waterfront homes at Admiralty Pier, left untouched as the flood defences proved more than man enough to cope with the highest, and wildest of tides.

Although today has been a little blustery, there have been blues skies and forecasters predict moderate weather over the next fortnight, with sunny intervals interspersed with clouds and occasional days with light rain.
