Bringing colour and joy to the peninsula after a period of relative darkness, is the principal aim of a new art gallery which has opened in Holbrook.

Lisa Thomas, the curator and inspiration behind Come Hither, on the Ipswich Road in the village has put together and eclectic collection of prints, drawings, paintings, pottery and jewellery reflecting the beauty of this part of East Anglia.

Although probably the smallest art gallery in Suffolk, it is huge in talent, creativity and it is not just the artists providing the talent, with Holbrook-based Suffolk Crafted, building the gallery itself in Lisa's, and fellow graphic designer husband Dan's, back garden.

Long before lockdown Lisa had wanted to forge a mobile artisan business with friend Cait Sparksman, an expert gardener at the Murray Edwards College, in Cambridge, who she had known since primary school, but some of the challenges proved insurmountable, so it was back to the drawing board.

Lisa said: "Cait knows all about plants, and I know about art, and we looked at getting a trailer and going around but we did not have the necessary contacts and then lockdown happened. I went on furlough as were was not enough work for me and my husband.

"From that we just decided to create this gallery. I decided after a year of misery what was needed was some colour and joy and that is what we have done.

"We wanted to champion people who are working in our area, because they are not having an awful lot to be doing and this would bring that colour and joy."

So that somewhat serendipitous start has led two many artists being exhibited and Lisa is open to giving other aspiring hopefuls a step in the right direction, if they fit in with the joyous, local theme.

"If it fits with the other art, then yes, we would consider others," said Lisa. "I didn't know some of these artists before we put this together but have got to know and they are really nice people which is important because their art fits in with what we are doing."

Come Hither Gallery is also raising funds for the St Elizabeth Hospice with a donation box, but also the opportunity to buy are print of a Glynn Thomas' work featuring Pin Mill. (as you can see next to picture of Lisa) by open auction with the current price at £219.
