Holbrook firefighters spent much of their Christmas Day afternoon and evening dealing with an ammonia leak almost an hour from their Shotley peninsula base.

The retained firefighters were among 11 crews called to a hazardous material leak at the Birds Eye factory in Lowestoft just before 4.30pm on Monday.

Appliances from Leiston, Wrentham, Beccles, North Lowestoft, Hadleigh, Haverhill and Lowestoft South, were with the Holbrook crew attending.

The fire crews worked alongside onsite engineers to isolate the source of the ammonia leak.

No casualties were reported by fire crews that searched the site.

Crews were stood down at 7.30pm to make the hour long trip back.
