A special half hour of fundraising and prayers will be held in Harkstead this evening to help those suffering around the world.

The Shoreline benefice is holding prayers for "A World On Fire" at St Mary's Harkstead between 730pm and 8pm.

Reverend Canon Liesbeth Oosterhof said: "This is a time to come together to offer in prayer the issues that dominate the news: wild fires, fires lit by criminals, war and civil unrest and another earthquake in Haiti."

Donations in cash or by card that evening will be sent to Shelterbox, a charity who work in many of the afflicted areas to alleviate the desperate need of many.

Refugees could be housed on the Shotley peninsula.
