The days of a Button Boy on top of the iconic HMS Ganges mast may be long gone but it appears a replacement is making a bid to be first on top when it goes up once more.

A sparrow hawk has taken up temporary residence in Nelson Hall where the 143ft mast is being lovingly restored and is enjoying gliding between the girders after swooping in to feast on some quails eggs last week.

Although the main doors have been left wide open, and a food trail enticing the bird of prey towards the exit is in place, it seems reluctant to leave just yet.

Meanwhile, restoration experts are making good progress with a specially selected Douglas Fir being hand-crafted to become part of the structure.

American greenheart will also be used, while rigging specialists are also ensuring the mast will once again be a spectacular centre-piece.
