Work will start to remove the historic and iconic mast on the former HMS Ganges site next month.
Specialists will start dismantling the spars, netting and rigging, leaving just the bottom part of the 142ft mast in early May,
The operation is due to be completed in times for a ceremony on June 6, which marks the last divisions held as the former Royal Navy Training Establishment ceased operations on that day in 1976.
The Royal Navy closed its ceremonial gates in October 1976, and the site was subsequently used as police training centre, and as a sports centre, before being sold to developers.
Councillor Derek Davis, Babergh's Ganges ward member, which covers Shotley and Erwarton, who trained at the base between July and September 1974, visited the site on Monday with the developers and is delighted with the progress.
"This is a major milestone for all of us what want to see themas restored to its former glory," said Cllr Davis. "I understand the cynicism perviously shown but to see the mast taken down and taken off to be renovated will be a real sign of intent and progress."
Joint developers Wavensmere and Galliard Homes are looking to start work on the first phase of redeveloping the site just after theEaster break as groundworkers move on the site.
A new construction entrance with be created at an existing bell mouth on the main B1456 going in to the former playing fields, which will avoid the use of Caledonia Road and the ceremonial gates.
Permission has already been granted to build 285 homes, in three phases, a small hotel, care home and retail units, including a grocery store. In addition Nelson Hall and the former swimming pool will be allowed to house extra facilities including a recreation space, library, museum and cafe.
