Nearly three dozen sausage dogs romped and rolled in four acres of open meadow in the first large meeting of its kind.

After some introductory growling, lots of sniffing and doggy style playing more than 30 Dachshunds, better known as sausage dogs, had a tail-wagging hour of fun, while their owners were able to have another and relax.

Georgie Hinkley, a dog groomer from Needham Market, organises the group meetings for the sausage dog group and was delighted with the space and security offered at Pear Tree Paws, which is close to the WadesLane bus stop on the main Chelmondiston to Shotley road on the B1456

"We do these walks once a month when everyone can get together," said Georgie.

"We wanted to come to Pear Tree paws so everyone could let their dogs off the leads and just have fun.

"It has been good turn out and all the dogs so seem to get on. It's secure safe and you don't have to worry about them getting out."

The group, which has members from across the county, has previously met at Woodbridge, Nacton Shore, Grundisburgh but they have encountered restrictions.

Georgie added: "None of the other places usually take more than six dogs, so to be able to come here and have so many playing and running around together is lovely."

Animal carer Georgie became hooked on sausage dogs a year and now owns five and is look to breed from them.

She said: "Sausage dogs are just brilliant. They are little characters, they are hilarious, so loving and fun to own."

The event went so well the group has already booked for two hours next May and owners Richard and Martine Carless are delighted at how successful Pear Tree Paws has already proved to be.

Pig farmer Richard put fencing around the paddock, which had previously been used as amenity land but laid fallow for some years, and after garnering opinion the couple decided to use the land for dog owners that wanted their dogs to be able to run free without worrying livestock or disturbing the birdlife on the shores.

"It was absolutely the right decision," said Richard. "We have had people come from miles away, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Hadleigh for example, and of course many from the peninsula, which has been terrific."

Although there is already a shelter for those rainy days, Richard is looking to add benches and other facilities to make it more comfortable for the owners.

There is lots of space for car parking and the couple are keen to listen to feedback to make the facility even better.
