Former Royal Hospital School pupil Jon Courtenay has won Britain's Got Talent after performing a funny but incredibly moving reflection of 2020 in the final.

Singing comedian Jon impressed viewers at home and studio judges to pip runners up Sign Along With Us and third placed act Steve Royal to secure a place at the Royal variety show and the £250,000 prize money.

47-year-old Courtenay who went to the Holbrook school more ethan 30 years ago has been a huge favourite with everyone since his first audition, which got a massive seal of approval from Ant and Dec when they hit their Golden Buzzer for him.

Courtney, who now lived in Manchester, broke down with emotion as the winner was announced following the emotional tribute he paid sining and playing the piano. Jon mentioned everything from Simon Cowell's dressing room to Ant and Dec's many award wins before homing in all the struggles so many of us have faced during a challenging year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Jon sang about being with our friends, standing on our doorsteps 'with pride in our chests' to clap for the NHS, before ending his stellar performance by singing the poignant lines: "It won't be long before these masks are gone, we'll be living life again to the maximum. And we'll remember people like Sir Captain Tom.

"And in years our kids will be reminiscing, not about the big stuff that they've been missing but the every day they got to play with dad and mum."

That line in particular moved judge Alesha Dixon to tears but all four were unanimous in their praise for the funny man.

Jon, who grew up in Suffolk with his dad the former caretaker at Suffolk County Council's old County Hall, is still in touch with RHS and has vowed to visit his old school following an invite from headmaster Simon Locker.

He added: "RHS has been great with their support and I still have a lot of family and friends in Suffolk who have been in touch and supporting me.

"I can't wait to get back and say hi in person. I owe a lot to RHS, they instilled in me a confidence that I am thankful for every time I walk on stage."'
