Drama at Brantham with one match called off due to Covid, then another halted after player allegedly punched fan

It was a dramatic day at Brantham Athletic yesterday when one game was postponed due to the coronavirus, then another had to be halted when violence erupted, at the Leisure Centre ground.

The first team game against Long Melford was called off after a player and two match day officials were tested positive for Covid-19, then hours later the Imps' A team's match agains Gas Recreation Reserves was abandoned after a visiting player jumped over a barrier and allegedly punched a Brantham supporter.

The indent happened in the second half of the match when a Brantham player Kyle Rolin went down with an injured ankle and had to be stretchered off. During the stoppage in play an altercation took place resulting in a Gas Rec player jumping into the spectator area and confronting a home supporter.

The referee abandoned the match and the incident will be reported to the Essex and Suffolk Border League and Suffolk FA. The match between Bratham's development team and Gas Rec reserves had been due to be played at Raydon, but was switched to the Leisure Centre when the first team league game with Long Melford was postponed due to a confirmed Covid-19 case.

A Brantham spokesman said: "We have been informed that a first team player and two match day officials have been tested positive for COVID and are currently self isolating at home. Everyone at the Club wish them speedy recoveries. The decision to postpone the match is a welfare and safety decision, to ensure that our players, volunteers and supporters remain safe therefore todays game will be played at a later date."

Nub News understand officials at both clubs are investigating the reason for the match being abandoned between the development team and Gas Rec Reserves.
