The FA are investigating after allegations that Brantham Athletic players were allegedly subjected to racist abuse in their FA Vase tie against Basildon Town on Saturday.

It is understood Brantham scorer Jose De La Cruz and former Whitton United and Hadleigh striker Asa Milliard were targeted by travelling Town fans, and the Imps number seven cupped his ear to the abusers after netting.

The Eastern Counties Division one side came from behind to win 2-1 but the victory was marred by allegations of racist behaviour from it supporters.

Brantham bosses have taken complaints form supporters seriously and have appealed for more witnesses to come forward and condemned all all aspects of discrimination.

Suffolk FA confirmed it was aware of reports of racist language being used during the FA Vase match and were compiling evidence.

Richard Neal, Suffolk FA chief executive, said: "Initial indications suggest this came from off the pitch and aimed towards those on the pitch.

"We are working with Essex FA as the County FA of Basildon Town FC, the appointed match officials, and Brantham Athletic FC to fully determine the circumstances behind the allegations. Following receipt of the full reports, the appropriate County FA will progress the case in line with FA requirements on such serious cases."

Mr Neal also confirmed that any players involved will receive help if needed.

He said: "Behaviour of any discriminatory nature has no place in football or society. Affected participants will be offered support through The FA's partnership with Sporting Chance."

Essex club Basildon Town, that share with East Thurrock FC, have been contacted for comment but have so far failed to respond.
