Early morning helicopter noise over Shotley explained

Helicopters circling over Shotley at 02.30 this morning were escorting a small ship into Harwich.

The multi-agency operation involved the UK Border Force, RNLI, two helicopters and Essex police, as they accompanied the pleasure craft Svanic into the port after she had sailed across from Ostende, Belgium

UK Border Force cutters Valiant and Searcher stayed close to the vessel, which flies under a St Kitts flag, and it is understood officers boarded the yacht before it entered the Stour.

The Svanic, which was formally a scientific research vessel, is now moored at the port of Harwich.

More details to follow.
