A peninsula teenager is planning on going halfway round the world to help an indigenous community.

Devon Lane, a 16-year-old from Chelmondiston, is travelling to Ecuador to take part in a Camps International expedition designed to for youngsters to experience first-hand the issues faced by rural communities in Ecuador whilst making a positive and lasting impact.

The youngsters are expected to contribute to ongoing sustainable projects that help support communities and protect the biodiverse environment in Ecuador.

Devon will also take on the personal challenge of completing a trek across the three peaks surrounding Lake Mojanda, offering him and he colleagues the chance to explore ancient ruins and witness some incredible views.

Devon, who helps out his mum Sara Lane, who runs the weekly Basics Life pop up food shop in Chelmondiston, outlined a few reasons why he wants to assist the people of Ecuador.

"First and foremost," he said, "Ecuador holds a special place in my heart due to its rich cultural heritage and breath taking natural beauty.

"The diverse indigenous communities, vibrant traditions, and stunning landscapes make it a truly unique country.

"It saddens me to see that many Ecuadorians face challenges and hardships in their daily lives, and I believe that by lending a helping hand, I can contribute to improving their well-being."

"Furthermore, the resilience and warmth displayed by the people of Ecuador inspire me.

"Despite the challenges they may encounter, Ecuadorians possess a remarkable spirit of perseverance and community. By assisting them, I hope to contribute to their resilience and empower them to overcome obstacles and create a brighter future."

Royal Hospital School student Devon is sure he can benefit personally from the experience.

He added: "I recognise that my own growth as an individual is intertwined with the well-being of others.

"Through the act of helping, I gain valuable experiences, broaden my perspective, and develop essential skills. By engaging with the people of Ecuador and understanding their unique challenges, I can expand my knowledge and contribute more effectively to future endeavours aimed at making a positive impact in the world."

As part of the trip Devon has had to fundraise to be able to take part in the project, which will also include working in the Amazon rainforest.

He said: "I am filled with immense gratitude and overwhelming joy. It is a moment of reflection and appreciation for the countless individuals who have played an instrumental role in my journey and supported me in all my endeavours. Each step of the way, I have been blessed with the guidance, encouragement, and assistance of exceptional people who have helped shape my path to success in raising £1,300.

"All my fundraising will help the communities of Ecuador by funding for the tools and resources for such amazing projects.
