Delays getting on and off peninsula after lorry hits level crossing barrier near Brantham

By Derek Davis 14th Jul 2021

Motorists trying to get through Brantham on the main A137 road suffered lengthy delays after a lorry struck the level crossing barrier near Manningtree railway station, this afternoon.

Cars were backed up nearly three miles at Brantham Hill on the Suffolk side of the crossing as Network Rail engineers closed the road off either side of the crossing, to make the area safe.

The lane from the Essex side was opened so vehicles could use the underpass to rejoin the A137.

Rail passengers on the main Norwich to Liverpool Street, including Ipswich and Colchester, line were also delayed as the trains were escorted through in slow time.

No-one was injured in the incident, which happened just after 1pm this afternoon.

No official comment regarding the accident has been made but Network Rail Anglia tweeted: " When the lights are flashing at level crossings STOP and WAIT for your own safety."
