New data has revealed how many people on the Shotley peninsula and its neighbouring villages have died due to Covid-19 related illness.

Figures compiled by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show 11 people died of coronavirus on the peninsula between March 1 and May 31 and were registered by June 6 2020.

A breakdown shows there were were also eight fatalities in the Brantham, East Bergholt and Capel area, 19 in Harwich, Dovercourt and Parkeston combined along with nine in Manningtree and Mistley.

There were a total of 21 deaths across the river Orwell in Felixstowe, Kirton and the Trimleys, while a further 10 were recorded to have died in the Mildenhall, Stoke Park and Port area, which abuts the Shotley peninsula.

Nationally, almost 250,000 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have survived, and locally no new deaths have been reported by the Trust which runs Ipswich and Colchester hospitals this month.

A map published by the ONS today pinpoints the areas where the deaths were recorded, but does not show the precise location.

To protect confidentiality, a small number of deaths have been reallocated between neighbouring areas.and the figures exclude death of non-residents.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) was the underlying cause or was mentioned on the death certificate as a contributory factor (ICD-10 codes U07.1 and U07.2).
