Alton Water Park has closed the park and all its facilities as the Government warned stricter restriction will be brought in if people continue to ignore advice to stay at home.

Prime minister Boris Johnsons reacted after large crowds were seen at holiday centres, country parks and the open spaces over the weekend.

Speaking at Downing Street's daily news conference, Mr Johnson said fresh air would not kill the virus and everyone had to act responsibly and practice social distancing.

He added: "If we can't do that then, yup, I'm afraid we're going to have to bring forward tougher measures."

And, the government issued a further statement, clarifying its advice that "people should avoid travelling unless it is essential".

Essential travel, the Department for Health and Social Care said, "does not include visits to second homes, camp sites, caravan parks or similar, whether for isolation purposes or holidays".

The increase of 48 UK virus deaths since Saturday includes 37 in England, seven in Wales, three in Scotland and another in Northern Ireland.

The NHS said all those who died in England in the past day were in vulnerable groups including with underlying health issues.

A spokesperson said: "We've sadly made the decision to close all of our water parks to the public with immediate effect to help limit the spread of coronavirus.

"We had hoped to keep our green spaces open, but the wellbeing and safety of our customers, visitors and colleagues is the most important thing at this time.

"We would encourage everybody to follow the Government's advice to social distance and not travel wherever possible to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

"We want to keep you updated with information about how we are responding to the coronavirus situation."
