The number of Covid-19 cases in Babergh, which includes the Shotley peninsula, decreased last week, according to latest figures by Public Health England.

Babergh's infection rate remained low at two positive cases per 100,000 people, with two cases identified last week and is in contrast with a rise in some neighbouring areas and nationwide.

Across the county show 70 people tested positive for Covid-19 during the seven days to Sunday, September 13 but Suffolk is still among the least affected nationwide with an equivalent of 9.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Positive coronavirus cases in the East Suffolk, which includes holiday resort Felixstowe, rose to 21 cases recorded in the week to September 13, compared with 16 the previous week. This puts the area's infection rate at 8.4 positive cases per 100,000 people, up from 6.4.

Ipswich recorded 10 positive cases, the same as the previous week, while Mid Suffolk had seven, also the same as the week before.

The overall figures shows Babergh has 295 confirmed cumulative cases, equating to 378.8 per 100,000 residents, which is lower than the Suffolk average, with Ipswich Borough the highest number.

The majority of cases across the county have been identified in people of working age or older people, compared with previous weeks from mid to late August, where younger people accounted for more than a quarter of all positive cases in Suffolk.

A noticeable spike in demand for tests in recent weeks, with people in Suffolk and other counties unable to book a slot or being told to travel long distances. Nub News reported a woman who lives on the peninsula and works at the Port of Felixstowe did not get test results back until after she had completed an isolation period.

In early September, the number of people visiting Suffolk's mobile testing units went up by 31% compared with the end of August.
