A host of facilities at the former HMS Ganges site have been approved by Babergh planners.

Developers of Barrelman's Point (Ganges) have received permission to demolish some buildings to allow the redevelopment of the site to include a large retail space, hotel, cafe, gym and clinic.

The amendments will also allow for a museum, library, community and exhibition space in Nelson Hall.

Parking and landscaping to form parks and landscaped gardens together with associated further landscaping and lighting was also included in the amendment.

Babergh approved the proposed change as non-material amendment to the permission as originally granted in 2015.

These facilities will complement the 285 homes being built on the site in a joint venture between Wavensmere Homes and Galliard Homes.

Once completed the site will be fully opened for use to all villagers and not restricted to Barrels Point residents.

Meanwhile, work of restoring the famed 143ft Ganges mast continues, with plans to put it back up by the parade ground in the summer of 2024.

Full details of the permission can be found on the Babergh planning website here using REF: DC/23/01247
