Wednesday's Peninsula Breakfast Briefing

Did you know?

The Battle of Hastings was actually fought on this day in 1066. King Harold II of England was defeated by the invading army of William, duke of Normandy, in the Norman Conquest, establishing Normans as rulers of England and that had a knock effect on the Shotley peninsula with land, including Harkstead, being given to a French general as a reward. He was not a good landowner, increased taxes and forced villagers to live in nearby woods as outlaws.

Quote of the day:

On the ceremonial gateway to the World War II British military cemetery for the dead of Normandy at Bayeux, one finds the apposite Latin inscription,

NOS A GULIELMO VICTI VICTORIS PATRIUM LIBERAVIMUS

(We, once conquered by William, have now set free the Conqueror's native land.)
