Demolition work is set to start on the former HMS Ganges site in Shotley as early as next week.

Developers have already been given permission to build 385 homes, retail units, workshops, cafe, and a nursing home.

They are also looking to change the use of the existing Nelson Hall, initially to market the phase one homes, but then other aspects of community use.

To make all this happen full demolition of some buildings, and partial demolition of others, (including part of the Nelson extension) need to take place.

Neighbours that will be directly affected by the works have been sent a notice by Babergh's building control team outlining the strict conditions demolition team have to abide by.

The letter points out that the intended commencement date is next Monday, April 4.

Meanwhile, HMS Ganges' iconic 143ft mast will be taken down to allow a full renovation, which will then be put back up to former the centre point of the development, being carried out as a joint venture between Wavensmere and Galliard Homes.

The Ganges site is being marketed as Barrelmans Point, a nod to the way sailors used to get the the top of masts to keep a look out.

People can register their interest in buying homes being built as part of the first phase by contacting the estate agent, probably Shotley man Callum Byford, of Connells who will get in touch. Register here...

Nub News reported earlier in the month how a dedicated entrance for construction was being used, coming off the main B1456 road, in Shotley Gate, with two lime trees being removed to allow the bell mouth to be opened up.

Mitigation in the form of tree planting and other landscaping will be carried out as part of the development.
