While pubs and other businesses have had to shut due to the national lockdown which came into effect today, it is a case of carrying on as usual for many of our shops and services.

Hairdressers Hers & Sirs in Chelmondiston has had close for the four weeks and all pubs on the peninsula have closed, although some will be offering takeaway services, including the recently opened Outlook Restaurant in Wherstead.

Holbrook Coastguard have helped rescue a canoeing couple on the River Stour after they got stuck near the shore.

The crew worked with Essex Fire Service to effect the rescue of the paddling pair who had got into difficulties near Cattawade. After finding the stranded duo who were cold and in some distress, the fire service reached them by boat and the Coastguard crew provided support.

Suffolk was on the cusp of entering Tier 2 prior to the government's national lockdown announcement, public health chiefs have said – and areas such as the Shotley peninsula could have been just a fortnight away from being included in the higher level.

It comes as a warning to those who have argued a lockdown in Suffolk is not warranted because infection rates were lower than other parts of the country.
