Woolverstone United are one point from going up as SIL Division Two champions after a 3-1 win over Melton United at Hazelwoods.

Goalscoring machine Hayden Catchpole netted his 27th goal in 23 games this season, while impressive midfielder Aaron Gordon got his 13th of the campaign and Marcus Lawrence also weighed in with a rare strike of his own.

Clive Catchpole's Stones go to bottom club Ipswich Athletic next Saturday, for a 2.30pm kick off at King George V Whitton ground, needing just a draw to secure the title.

Woolverstone won promotion last week with a 4-1 win over Elmswell, who were beating 9-0 at Cockfield yesterday.

Cockfield are the only team to have beaten Woolverstone in the league this season and are six points behind in second place with two games to play, both at home.

They 9-0 victory has edged them ahead in the goal difference stakes and if they win both games, and Woolverstone slip up in the rearranged match against Athletic, will secure the title.

In the unlikely event Woolverstone lost next weekend, may have to wait until the end of April to see if Cockfield also slip up when they play Melton United on the 30th, the week before that the Cocks take on Stonham Aspal, also at home.

Woolverstone's game at Athletic on March 5 was abandoned after the referee was threatened and Suffolk FA are investigating the incident. Full story here...
