A 38-year-old from Wherstead Road accused of bringing the A14 to a complete halt for more than four hours has been remanded in custody ahead of a crown court appearance

Stuart Winney, of Wherstead Road today appeared at Suffolk Magistrates' Court accused of a single charge of causing a public nuisance after hewn to the Orwell Bridge on Saturday with the intention to disrupt the community.

Robert Saunders, the magistrates' chairman, told Winney he must appear before Ipswich Crown Court on Monday, September 6.

Wayne Ablett, prosecuting, told magistrates the A14 was closed for more than four hours on Saturday, and explained how hundreds of motorists were caught in the gridlock, with people getting out of their cars and walking along the busy carriageway which is normally one of Suffolk's busiest road.

With the road shut, vehicles were diverted through Ipswich town centre which caused traffic chaos as the bridge closure came at the same time as shoppers, football fans, truckers and wedding guests were making their way along the major Suffolk route.
