Although P&O operated passenger trips from Southampton to Gibraltar in 1844, the first purpose built cruise ship ever was launched in 1900, named the Prinzessin Victoria Luise, of German company the Hamburg-America Line. She accidentally ran aground off the coast of Jamaica in 1906 but the cruise ship industry was well underway by then.Today's Peninsula sunrise: 05:40
