Shotley marina's annual lock closure starts tomorrow morning and walkers have been advised to use the diverted route to the public right of way.

The lock area will be fenced off from 07.00 Monday, February 1 until February 12 as work is carried out on all the main components, including the hydraulics, as part of its yearly maintenance programme.

The top gate of the marina will be kept open so dog walkers, ramblers and locals taking their daily exercise can walk through and continue to use the public right of way as before.

Meanwhile, work has been going on as part of the ongoing battle with coastal erosion near the marina.

Large rocks have been used to help protect the shoreline, but access to the beach, which is technically private property is still being allowed to the general public.

Work on yachts at the marina has continued as much as possible, although the Shipwreck bar and restaurant and the Lofts bed and breakfast have been closed.

Protective measures are also being considered after ant-social behaviour by so-called joy riders caused damage to the grassy knoll near the marina's main entrance.
