Visitors have been advised not to try and visit the waterfront at Shotley as roadworks will serious hamper motorists.

Resurfacing work is due to begin in earnest tomorrow (Thursday, May 21) on mile long stretch of the main B1456 road from Shotley to the bottom of Bristol Hill in Shotley Gate.

The work is due to take place over a two week period, with the initial new surface going down over the next couple of days, and remedial work, including sweeping of loose clippings, over the next fortnight.

Suffolk Highways and contractors are carrying out the roadworks, which will be followed by line -marking, and more delays.

Derek Davis, Babergh district councillor for Ganges ward, which includes Shotley Gate, said: "I can understand why people want to come and visit this area, it is beautiful.

"However, even though many have been sticking to the guidelines and have stayed at home, or in there own locality, others have taken advantage of the weather and our opens spaces to come to the waterfront.

"Given the amount of roadworks going on due to resurfacing work from Thursday, then Friday and probably into the weekend I would string suggest visitors stay away.

"They will only get frustrated at the traffic lights, the closed sections of road, the lack of parking, and that is even before the mess stones and Tarmac will make to their cars."
