UPDATED: 2pm - tree cleared.

A pair of trees have today blocked the top of a road on the Shotley peninsula after being blown over by a strong gust of wind at around 9.30am.

The co-joined conifers fell across the B1456 at the top of Bristol Hill, which is the only way in and out of the bottom part of Shotley Gate.

Villagers armed with chainsaws helped clear some of the debris and made a path so people could safely make their way past the blockage while waiting for Suffolk Highways to remove the trees.

A spokesman for Suffolk Highways said: "Please bear with us while our teams are working to clear the tree and reopen the road."

Meanwhile, the site manager of Barrelmans Point, the former HMS Ganges, arranged for a controlled diversion from the main road through the site and onto Caledonia Road.

Tree surgeons employed by developers Wavensmere are planning to cut down the tops of other trees on the edge of the site to make the boundary safe.
