In 1170, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket was murdered by four knights who believed they were carrying out the will of King Henry II Becket is venerated as a saint and martyr by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. Soon after his death, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III.
