Did you know?

The highest gallantry award for animals is called the Dickin Medal.

Kuno, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois will become the 72nd recipient of the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross after he tackled a gunman and was hit by bullets in both back legs. Previous award-winners since 1943 include; 34 dogs, 32 pigeons, four horses and one cat.

The PDSA Dickin Medal is the highest award any animal can receive whilst serving in military conflict. Instituted in 1943 by PDSA's founder Maria Dickin CBE, it acknowledges outstanding acts of bravery or devotion to duty displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war throughout the world.

Thought for the week

Help us, dear God, to learn from all wild things. How to live in harmony with our land; how to deal with enemies; how to live in peace with those who are unlike us; how strong is the love of a parent; how the young must learn to grow up; how to enjoy the beauty of strength and life and how to accept death.

Amen.
