Win or lose, Shotley peninsula pupils will be allowed a couple of extra hours' sleep to get over the result.

Head teachers at Chelmondiston, Shotley and Stutton primary schools are allowing parents to give their children a lay in on Monday so they can stay up late to watch England's Euro's final match against Italy on Sunday.

Mums and dads are being advised to allow their children to stay up until 11pm on the Sunday and use the game as a learning experience.

At Chelmondiston, pupils can come in at 10am without being penalised. Tracy Whayman, school business manager at

Chelmondiston C of E Primary School said: "This allows for extra sleep for pupils but also the cook to have enough notice to cook hot dinners for that day."

Although the two ASSET primary schools in Stutton and Shotley will open as usual first thing Monday morning, students can come in at 10.30am and they will not register any pupil as being late.

Richard Dedicoat, head teacher at Shotley Primary said: "We've made the decision that children can arrive a little later on Monday as we celebrate the first major football final for 55 years and first Euro's Final ever.

" We're allowing pupils to be late for school on Monday (up to 10.30) so they won't be tired and grumpy if they have stayed up late to watch football coming home (hopefully). If there are child care issues then it's business as usual.

"If you want your children to stay up and experience this once in generation experience then you now have this opportunity.

"Can I encourage you to talk about national pride, the anthem, fair play, and possibly dealing with disappointment. This is after all our national game and has helped so many of us celebrate after some challenging months.

"COME ON ENGLAND!"
