James Cartlidge quits

James Cartlidge has told prime minister Boris Johnson he can no longer support him and has resigned his positions as a junior minister.

South Suffolk MP, which includes the Shotley peninsula, and Justice Department minister Cartlidge stood down the day after saying he would stay on to complete vital legislation.

Although previously being an ardent supporter, Mr Cartlidge now believes it is not even 'remotely possible' for the PM to change and reset.

In part of his letter to Johnson, Mr Cartlidge said: "I felt duty-bound to remain in post given the very challenging circumstances affecting the criminal courts. I took the view that there had to be some semblance of government in this crucial arm of our constitution. But the position is clearly untenable."

More than 50 MPs have resigned from Johnson's parliamentary payroll but he refuses to stand down as prime minister despite being urged to by many senior cabinet ministers.
