UPDATED: The club raised nearly £450 in total towards helping the Ukrainian refugee coming to Shotley. This was made up from the cake sale, club cards and separate donations.
A charity coffee and cake sale has proved sweet success to help a Shotley resident who is in the process of taking in a Ukrainian family.
Home-baked coffee, carrot, cream and chocolate cake adorned the pool table at Shotley Sailing Club this morning for the fundraiser.
There were also sausage rolls to add a bit of savoury and the mix suited all ages, as young children with parents and grandparents among the hungry hordes.
Organised by Katie Byford and Karen Smith the sale at the club was open to all and started at 11am, donations will carry on being taken until everything is sold.
They roped in other helpers, including Kate's expert tea brewer husband Colin and daughter Libby, who manned the cake table, resided temptation and took donations.
All monies raised will go to the Go-Fund me page set up by Emma Adams, from Shotley Gate, who is flying out to Poland next week to meet Ukrainian refugee, Valeria Bublikova, who will travel from Cherkasy in Ukraine to meet Emma in Warsaw.
The university student's mother, Liudmyla, has decided to stay for now to help their grandmother and others in Chernihiv, which was badly hit by Russian strikes, but she hopes to travel here at a later date with the dog Mila.
