A psychiatric report has been ordered by a judge ahead of sentencing hearing for the man who caused nearly five hours of delays by clambering onto the Orwell Bridge.

Stuart Winney of Wherstead Road, Ipswich, pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance on August 7 this year and will be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on October 15.

Winney, 38, caused chaos when the bridge was forced to close at around 5pm on a Saturday afternoon as fans were going home from an Ipswich game.

Shoppers, wedding guests and lorry drivers were also caught up in the delays, which authorities have estimated costs of around £170,000.

Ipswich Crown Court heard an intoxicated Whinney called the emergency services, then climbed onto the bridge's structure and dangled his legs over the side before police could get him down and arrest him.

Judge David Pugh adjourned sentence for psychiatric and pre-sentence reports to be prepared on Winney.

Jess Peck, speaking for Winney, revealed there was a lot of personal mitigation relating to the incident.
